Hear the music of female duo Bettenroo Thursday at BJ’s.
Hello out there, my awesome readers. I have a new group to tell you about; well, actually two. First up is a female trio called Girlz Rule. If you’ve been to Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill to hear Copper Sky, then you already know one of its members, Heather Vidal. We heard Heather and her partner Dave Huxta last week and, as always, I was thoroughly entertained by their music and Heather’s incredible voice and guitar playing. Unbeknownst to me, Heather is also the guitarist for vocalists Lynley Tolls & Kristie Bobal. Together they released a CD called Girlz Rule in 2014 of covers and originals. Lynley hails from the Hampton Roads, Va., area (originally from Cleveland, Ohio) where she studied dance at Old Dominion, was dance captain on the Spirit of Norfolk, then branched out into musical theatre and singing in a show band. In addition to singing with Girlz Rule, Lynley plays lead and double second steel pans, congas and bass guitar with her husband in the well-known trop rock band The Calypso Nuts. Kristie is a Nashville, Tenn., native who sang and toured with Tall Paul and recorded Absolutely Perfect In Every Way and Covers. I listened to a few of their songs and their three-part harmony is mesmerizing and so beautiful. You can learn all about these three gals, as I did, at http://girlzrulemusic.wix.com/girlzrule. They will be appearing at the Bethany Boathouse on Saturday, July 23rd if you just can’t wait to hear them; but they will be right here for us on Wednesday, July 27th at Coconuts. I’m certainly looking forward to hearing these talented ladies. This weekend Coconuts presents Old School on Saturday and Rick & Regina on Sunday with so much more each and every day. Be sure to check out their complete listing in Who’s Where When. http://coconuttimes.com/oc-md-whos-where-when
BJ’s is the place to be on Friday night to hear the newly formed band called Movin’ & Groovin’. I had the chance to hear them on a Thursday a few weeks ago. Renowned bass man Elwood Bishop (of No Byscuyts fame) called on his long-time friend Cliff “Dar” Harmon to join him for a new project that largely features the guitar and vocals of this accomplished musician. You may have heard Dar play in the group Conjunction Function, mainly in the Rehoboth, Dewey area. Also from that area is Jim Miller on trumpet, a well known musician who also plays in the Delmarva Big Band and also with Jay Hoad, that unique musician from Australia who visited us for a few summers (sure would be good to have him back). The band is completed with drummer Mike Littlejohn. Their music is a mix of funk, soul and rock with such tunes as “Wish Those Days,” “Sexual Healing,” “Word Up,” “Hey Ya,” “Take Me to the River,” “Let’s Dance,” “Miss You,” and more. You can see by these titles that they cover a lot of musical territory. They ended that night with a rendition of “Purple Rain” that just blew me away - quite possibly the best I’ve heard - except the exalted Prince, of course. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this group just as much as I did.
The excellent music at BJ’s continues with the Chest Pains on Saturday night. Rumor has it that Jeff Davis is returning to his bass position. I hear that he is playing with Full Circle at the Globe, so that’s good news; but take it easy, Jeff.
Thursday night, again a new deal for BJ’s to be trying out, Bettenroo will return to entertain us. Yes, girls do rule. This talented duo is Anne Davey on bass who also has a lovely voice, both melodic and powerful; and Lori Jacobs singing, playing guitar, harp and foot pedal drums. Yes, she is amazing to watch. They play a very eclectic program of old and new music with a few originals thrown in. Check out their website, http://bettenroo.com/music, to hear a few of their tunes they hope to have released on a CD this summer. And when you visit their site, I am proud to say they have chosen a photo I took of them for their home page. I am honored. Enjoy!
We had a blast at Bourbon St. for last night’s Open Mic. So many talented people came by. Young Ashley on ukulele,  a wonderful jazz couple, Maryalice & John, from New Jersey, sax man Jay Cleaver from the Fabulous Hubcaps w/ Troy Hanna, several more and Dave Hamilton (from Pittsburgh) who will be back with his bandmates, Brother From Another Mother, to play Friday night after Jack Worthington. Jack brought his former bandmate Neil to play harp with him - really, really good. So much good music at Bourbon St. Wednesday night has become a magical magnet drawing talent not only from our area but from other areas as well. Come in Saturday night for the return of that raucous rock band 33 RPM. I say raucous because between the antics of bass man Rock and the energetic drumming style of Mike Beaven, these guys put on one heck of a show. Larry is the calm one of the trio but there’s nothing calm about his guitar playing. Bring your appetite with you, ‘cause the food is delicious. Check our Who’s Where When for much more.
There’s so much more I could talk about such as Billie Carlins at Adolfo’s on Thursdays; well, for that matter, myself & Michael Smith on Tuesdays at Adolfo’s. Yep, shameless self promotion - come see us. Joe Mama will feature Anthony Carmen this Sunday. The Purple Moose rocks it with Remedy and I can’t wait to finish ‘talking’ to you so I can go hear AC/DC tribute High Voltage. Thursday tribute coming up will be a Bon Jovi group called Bon Journey. And look up a new group to the Purple Moose (I think) called Honey Extractor. Their facebook page looks like they’re pretty rockin’. Of course they are - it’s the Purple Moose.
Whatever you do, remember to always party safe!
