Hello, out there my friends. I’m talking to you today after a fantastic night at The Purple Moose where Judas Priestess delivered yet another amazing performance in a tribute to the heavy metal gods, Judas Priest. Militia (vocals), Josette (guitar), Rena (guitar), Gyda (bass) & Hillary (drums) delivered high octane energy of all our favorites having also added a few new numbers to their show. There is so much I could say about these talented women but I don’t have space or energy to do that here. Check out their website and read the impressive bios of each one. Here’s a snippet from Militia’s bio: The man who brought The Beatles to America, Sid Bernstein, calls her “A superstar!” Militia has toured as the leading female vocalist in Dee Snider’s heavy metal horror orchestra Van Helsing’s Curse and in Europe with Jesus Christ Superstar. She has performed with Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Dayne, Nancy Sinatra, Sandra Bernhard and CX Kidtronik. This reporter says that Militia has the most incredible voice I’ve ever heard - power, range and a delivery that is both powerful and mesmerizing. There’s much more about this killer vocalist and her bandmates there. I have many pictures to share with you but don’t have them prepared yet (there are other new photos in Fun Fotos today, though, so check them out).
I’m a little off my mark this week. As many of you know, I was involved in a car accident last Saturday in that awful traffic jam after the air show. Someone decided to make a right-hand turn from the far left lane and I was going through the intersection right in his way. But you know what, I’m glad I was there because there were pedestrians crossing the street right where he would have gone had I not been. So if my car took the hit for them, I’m glad; just really bummed that my car is totaled and I’m having trouble holding my arm up to take pictures. Oh well, it could have been much worse, say if he had hit me in my door. So, all in all, perhaps it was meant to be. Everyone knows I’ve been nursing my old car along for a while now. But besides being a good car (2002 Buick Century) with an excellent engine, it had great sentimental value as my two daughters and I were with Ronnie in that car when he passed on into the next realm (missing him). But I’ve got to let that go and move on. So ... forgive me for prattling on. I’m going to make this a bit shorter than usual.
Going from a heavy metal all-girl group last night, BJ’s on the water will be continuing in that vein with two all-female bands this weekend; but in quite the other musical direction. Tonight, Friday, we’ll have Luna Sea featuring the duo of Bettenroo - that’s Lori Jacobs on guitar and Anne Davey on bass. They will be joined by Kathy Nace Jones on lead guitar and Patty DiMadugeo on drums. I can’t wait to hear them again. They really impressed us last time out playing a huge variety of music while also showing off their rockin’ chops. We loved it when Kathy & Lori got into some guitar duels - awesome! Join me tonight for a great time.
Then come on back Saturday night to hear The Girlfriends. I’ve written about these talented gals several times as we fell in love with them last summer, and they were invited back again and again. Come out and say hi to Robin on bass, Kim on guitar and Jill on drums. Each one of these women are amazingly proficient with their instruments and they each sing as well, providing some well-blended harmonies. Their music includes everything from some girl band hits of the ‘60s and right on through each decade to some hits of today. This is one entertaining show from start to finish. These friendly women will soon be your girlfriends, too.
Now my dilemma is, one of my favorite groups ever will be at the Purple Moose both Friday and Saturday nights. I’m referring, of course, to Surreal. Brian, Walt, Will & Rene are the ultimate long-hair band of ‘80s music, even though two of the guys have cut their hair now. That’s okay; unlike Samson, their talent is undiminished. Walt’s voice will soar, Brian’s guitar will make us soar, Will’s bass and his delivery will rev us up and Rene’s drums will drive it all home. These guys are the real deal with a huge fan base so be prepared to party with a lot of other fans. That’s at The Purple Moose, the legendary home of rock ‘n roll, Friday & Saturday.
Okay, I said I need to not write too much; I’m getting really tired, achy. Just let me say that there are lots of great bands around town. I wanted to talk about some acts I’ve seen lately but, again, let’s move forward, right? Check out the Who’s Where When list for great choices.
Love to all - and to Kevin Poole as he pushes on after that horrifying ordeal of the spider bite on his playing finger. Those images were awful but his warning important - wear gloves when gardening. Have a great time in OC, my friends, be careful out there, and look out for the other drivers. EEEEKKK! Party Safe!
