The Freeman Stage At Bayside

Friday, July 24th. 2015
What another perfect evening for a concert at The Freeman Stage At Bayside ... not hot, no wind or clouds and no need for the OFF spray. My first impression of Heart as the band took the stage was that sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson make being in their 60's look like the new 40's; and their voices sounded just like their records from decades ago. They opened with "Magic Man" to get the sold-out and mostly local crowd, from what I saw, on their feet for most of the night. It was then "Heartless," and "What About Love" before Ann says to the crowd, “we got a bad-ass guitarist in this band, my sister Nancy Wilson,” before going into "Kick It Out," to which Nancy does a lot of air-kicking, as she did throughout the night. With the opening words, "Quite some time" brings on "Straight On." The night was mostly a 1970’s and 1980's hits package, but next was "59 Crunch," one of two songs from their latest release, Fanatic, from 2012. After the next song, "There's A Girl," it was time for Nancy to trade in her electric guitar for an acoustic and now Ann comes out with an acoustic, too, to play an Elton John cover, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters," and still acoustic for "These Dreams." After "Alone," we heard the second song off their latest release, "Dear Old America," highlighted by rotating colors of Red White & Blue for the stage lighting. For their second cover of the night they chose The Sonic's "The Witch," (and earlier in the tour they were playing Robin Trower's "Day of the Eagle") which I would have loved to hear them play live). To close out their first set, it was Nancy's guitar solo to kick off "Crazy on You" and ending with "Barracuda".
After a quick break, this encore probably caught all the fans off guard. With a band with such an impressive back catalog, they chose to do a three song Led Zeppelin set. When I saw Heart two years ago with the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience, Ann mentioned how much Led Zeppelin had an influence on them growing up, so on a small tour like this one, why not let it fly, and that they did. They played "Immigrant Song," "No Quarter," and closed out with "Misty Mountain Hop." All three songs generated a warm and healthy applause from the crowd. I don't think anyone left not saying it was a great show and that they had a great time - I know I did. You can keep up with Heart at
