Cage the Elephant / TAB The Band
Borgata Event Center
Atlantic City, NJ • September 3, 2010

Opening the show were TAB The Band, an American indie rock band from Duxbury, Massachusetts consisting of brothers Adrian Perry (lead vocals/bass) and Tony Perry (guitar), the sons of Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. For more info go to their website www.tabtheband.com.
Up next, Cage the Elephant, a hard-rock quintet from Bowling Green, Ky., led by brothers Matt Schultz (vocals and head-shaking, hyperactive prancing) and Brad Schultz (guitar). They played a lot of tracks from their self-titled debut album, including "In One Ear", "Back Against the Wall", and of course, "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked". For more info go to their website www.cagetheelephant.com.
Headliners Stone Temple Pilots took their respective places in front of the audience on a stage enveloped by a 180-degree gigantic backdrop of hundreds of light bulbs on which colors, video and words were projected. This was the first time I had seen a backdrop actually made of light bulbs.  STP began their set with some vintage tunes, such as  "Crackerman", with vocalist Scott Weiland sporting his traditional megaphone in hand; and running right into "Wicked Garden", "Vasoline" and "Heaven and Hot Rods." Then  they broke into some songs from their newest self-titled release on which the band - the DeLeo brothers Robert on bass, Dean on guitar and Eric Kretz on drums - has been enjoying good reviews. The new songs, "Between The Lines", "Hickory Dichotomy", and their newest radio hit "Cinnamon," received a nice response from the audience, but the next song, "Big Empty," really picked up the crowd's energy directly followed by a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Dancing Days." Then things started ramping up with "Pretty Penny," "Silvergun Superman," and fan favorite "Plush," featuring a crowd sing-along followed up by "Interstate Love Song," and one more off their new album, "Huckleberry Crumble." They closed their main set with "Down" and "Sex Type Thing," which contained some blinding strobe lights and the wall of light bulbs behind the band in a blinding white.
After a short break, the band returned for their encore playing "Dead & Bloated," which began with a dramatic opening and Weiland's a capella vocals on his megaphone once again. Then "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" ended a show that definitely rocked from start to finish and sounded as strong and clear as one would expect from a live STP show. Unfortunately, they have no more dates close to us but check out their website for future updates and tour news at www.StoneTemplePilots.com.
