Eleven wild party songs to blast while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day
It’s that time of the year again! It’s finally warm enough to not have to wear 20 layers of clothing and all we can hope is for the great weather to continue on through the weekend for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 15. Part of Coastal Highway in mid-town Ocean City and the parking lot of the 45th Street Village will shut down during the day for the 33rd annual event where all will celebrate by drinking delicious beer of all varieties, even if it’s green! This is the first big town event of the year and I hope to see you all out there as I plan to party my face off! On that note, I’d like to share my 11 favorite party songs that would be a great fit on any playlist for any event as crazy this parade. Stay safe and have a blast this weekend!
“Sexy and I Know It”
By: LMFAO
Off the album: Sorry for Party Rocking (2011)
Yes, they’re mindless, but this music is hilarious and most people don’t realize their songs are actually parodying modern dance music. Just watch the music video of this song and you’ll get what I’m saying.
“Celebration”
By: Kool & the Gang
Off the album: Celebrate! (1980)
Surprisingly, this was the band’s only #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Though songs such as “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging” were ridiculously popular, it wasn’t until new singer James “J.T.” Taylor came in that the band had the greatest success of their career.
“Super Freak”
By: Rick James
Off the album: Street Songs (1981)
Rick James brings the funk with this song… and also a little bit of R&B by having The Temptations (known for the classic “My Girl”) sing background vocals. Although the song only reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it was the #1 American dance song for a few weeks.
“Love Shack”
By: The B-52’s
Off the album: Cosmic Thing (1989)
The most famous song by the B-52’s was inspired by the cabin where the band recorded their first hit, “Rock Lobster.” Singer Kate Pierson actually lived in the cabin in the 70s and the building stood until it burned down in 2004.
“Stayin’ Alive”
By: Bee Gees
Off the album: Saturday Night Fever: The Original Movie Sound Track (1977)
Written for the film Saturday Night Fever, the song wasn’t even originally supposed to be released as a single. However, its appearance in the movie’s trailer boosted the song’s popularity and the single ended up as the #1 song in the U.S. for a month straight.
“Jump”
By: Van Halen
Off the album: 1984 (1984)
While this song was a bit of a deviation of the band’s normal rock sound with the heavy use of synthesizers, there’s still some classic Eddie Van Halen shredding action. He actually says it’s his favorite solo he’s never written, since it was spliced from two different takes.
“Rock the Casbah”
By: The Clash
Off the album: Combat Rock (1982)
What the heck do they keep saying in the chorus!? Sharif – noun – a Muslim ruler, magistrate or religious leader. Casbah – noun – type of quarter, city or fortress. The more you know!
“(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher”
By: Jackie Wilson
Off the album: Higher and Higher (1967)
Yes, I put this song higher than many other party classics, but simply because it’s one of the happiest songs ever written, it deserves to be pushed up a bit higher (Get it!? Ah, I’m so clever). Wilson originally sang the song like a soul ballad, but producer Carl Davis told him he has to give the song more energy if he wants it to be a hit. Wilson then performed the vocals you hear now in one take.
“Beat It”
By: Michael Jackson
Off the album: Thriller (1983)
Two Eddie Van Halen appearances in one column! Although the guitarist wasn’t able to appear in the song’s music video because of his record label, Van Halen did go on stage and perform the song during the Jackson Brother’s Victory Tour in 1984. Michael Jackson, interestingly, was never interested in making a rock ‘n’ roll type song like this, but was convinced by his producer, Quincy Jones.
“Get Lucky”
By: Daft Punk
Off the album: Random Access Memories (2013)
This is easily the biggest dance song to come out in recent years. Being that Daft Punk had not released an album since 2005, fans were eagerly anticipating (to put it lightly) this release, and the band certainly delivered. After the band spoke to singer and rapper Pharrell Williams about the new album, he joked that he’d just be happy to play tambourine. They then met at Daft Punk’s home base in Paris and one of the best collaborations in recent memory was born.
“(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)”
By: Beastie Boys
Off the album: Licensed to Ill (1986)
This is the ultimate party song of all time. Even though it’s intended to be a parody of songs such as “I Wanna Rock,” many fans took the song literally… and I don’t blame them. It’s still a fun song that will get everyone pumped as soon as it begins playing. If you just can’t stop raging, the band returned to the party in Adam Yauch’s short film Fight for Your Right Revisited, which includes cameos of several actors including Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell and Danny McBride.
