While winter tried its hardest to stay around all year, it finally feels like spring! Although this past month has been so cold, all I want now is hot summer rays giving me a nice tan. Since that won’t be happening any time soon, summer blockbuster movie season has started early to help us survive the wait. And what better way is there to enjoy these films than at the newly renovated Fox Sun & Surf Cinema on 143rd Street in Ocean City! Re-opened as of April 30, four of the theater’s eight screens now have luxury power recliners to keep your butt comfy while watching the silver screen. But don’t fret, as the other four screens will also be fully renovated and open on May 20. Now with this facelift, we don’t have to travel to Salisbury for a prime movie-watching experience! In celebrating the re-opening of Fox Sun & Surf Cinema, here are my six most anticipated films releasing in May and June.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Release date: May 1
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo
It’s been almost an entire year since we have had the pleasure of watching a new Marvel movie on the big screen, and this film looks to more than make up for the wait. Joss Whedon returns to helm the sequel to his insanely popular, star-studded movie about the greatest super hero team of all time (yeah, I said it, DC fans). Things seem to be going well for The Avengers, until Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) uses an artificial intelligence to head his “Ultron” global defense program. Unsurprisingly, something goes wrong, Ultron gets a mind of its own, and he is determined to destroy humanity. Comic book fans are excited to see X-Men staples Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch join the action, which adds to the already huge list of expected super heroes you will see in this movie.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Release date: May 15
Starring: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult
Sorry, we will not be seeing an aged Mad Max played by Mel Gibson return to action, as this film is a reboot. But there is a lot to look forward to in this new adaptation; most importantly the fact that the director and writer of the previous trilogy, George Miller, is back in the same role. Although it would have been awesome to see Gibson reprise the role as an older Mad Max, I have all the faith in the world that Tom Hardy (best known for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) will do justice to the character. Following a new story, Max (Hardy) meets Imperator Furiosa (Theron) and her female crew, who have run away from captivity by a bloodthirsty gang. Their travels are intense, as the continuation of the human race depends on the survival of women.
Pitch Perfect 2
Release date: May 15
Starring: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld
If you’re looking for something more along the lines of the celebration of women as opposed to the survival of them, this film is for you. The sequel to the musical comedy that took everyone by surprise has the entire major cast returning, with a couple of great new additions. Hailee Steinfeld will play a new member of a capella group The Barden Bellas, and Katey Segal (of Married… with Children and Futurama fame) will be playing her character’s mother. Elizabeth Banks has much more involvement than her cameo role in the previous movie as the film’s director (making this her debut as director for a full-length feature). Guys, I have to say that your significant other is not crazy by wanting you to watch this flick. The first film was hilarious, and the sequel looks to be just as good.
Tomorrowland
Release date: May 22
Starring: George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson
If Disney can make a movie franchise out of a single ride (Pirates of the Carribean), then I can only anticipate what they can do with a film based on an entire section of their park. Casey Newton (Robertson) is a delinquent who comes across a token that gives her a vision of a futuristic world. Curious, she finds grizzled and bad-mannered inventor Frank Walker (Clooney) and the two travel to the world in hopes of discovering its secrets. In all honesty, I couldn’t care less what the plot is about, but what makes me excited for this movie is that Brad Bird (director of many great films such as The Incredibles and The Iron Giant) is directing this movie. Also, two big contributors of the television show LOST play a big part in this film. LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof wrote and produced Tomorrowland, and the TV show’s composer, Michael Giacchino, is the composer for Tomorrowland.
Entourage
Release date: June 3
Starring: Kevin Connoly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon
I’ll be honest; I thought all the talk about a movie being made after the TV show ended was just wishful thinking by fans. But here we are! The movie reportedly begins right where the series left off, following the fictional career of movie star Vincent Chase and his entourage (get it!?) of friends. Encouraging for fans, the creator and showrunner of the television show, Doug Ellin, is the film’s director. This movie is going to be loaded with celebrity cameos such as Mark Wahlberg, George Takei and Tom Brady. HBO, the film’s production company, is waiting to see the movie’s reception before confirming a sequel, but the actors involved in Entourage are confident that this will not be the last time you will see Vinny and his gang.
Jurassic World
Release date: June 12
Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio
It’s hard to believe it has been 14 years since a Jurassic Park movie has been in theaters! This is a sequel to the first Jurassic Park and ignores the events of the two sequels that were good, but not great. Twenty-two years after the incident at Jurassic Park, the island is now a fully functioning park called Jurassic World. The operators of this park could have been sensible and just be happy that dinosaurs are once again walking on this planet, but they believe it’s a great idea to create a genetically modified mutant dinosaur called Indominus Rex. The super-dinosaur escapes confinement and goes on a rampage in the park. It is now up to Velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Pratt) to assist security in containing the dangerous beast.
