Sigur Rós

Judging by the amount of traffic in Ocean City, both on the roads and the boardwalk, Springfest 2013 was a hit! Throughout the weekend, thousands browsed through the unique arts and crafts tents while also hearing some great musical acts, capped off by an amazing performance from Foreigner, who brought members of the Stephen Decatur High School Choir on stage to help sing during ballad, “I Want to Know What Love is.” Now that the spring season is in full-swing, all there is left to do is pray to the Old Gods and the New that summer weather will come quickly. While we wait, here are seven greatly anticipated albums that will release this summer!

Megadeth
Super Collider
Release date: June 4
Megadeth is here to remind us that heavy metal isn’t dead! The band’s fourteenth album release, Super Collider, will feature the same lineup as their 2011 album, Thirteen, which is the first time that has happened since Cryptic Writings released in 1997. According to frontman Dave Mustaine, this release will be darker and faster than their previous album, which is surely a delight to metalheads. While the band has been through several lineup changes, longtime bassist and backing vocalist Dave Ellefson, who did not return when the band reformed in 2004, returned to the lineup in 2010 and will be a part of this album as well.

Queens of the Stone Age

…Like Clockwork
Release date: June 4
Oh man, June 4 is going to be a great day. Josh Homme’s psychedelic rock group is back for their first release since 2007, the longest hiatus between albums since the band began recording. This album will also feature the most star power than any QOTSA album before. Foo Fighters frontman and rock legend Dave Grohl will reprise his drumming duties that he performed on the band’s album, Songs for the Deaf. Also notable are the guest appearances of Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan, who has appeared on each QOTSA album since Rated R, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, and even the legendary Sir Elton John, himself.

Black Sabbath
13
Release date: June 10
Yes, you read that right, Black Sabbath is back! Seemingly a lucky number for heavy metal bands, 13 marks the return of three out of the four founding members of the band, finally together in the studio once again – guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and of course, singer Ozzy Osbourne. To put things into perspective, this is the first time all three have been featured on a Black Sabbath album since the 1978 release, Never Say Die! Even though Iommi is currently battling the early stages of lymphoma, the band is still embarking on a worldwide tour this month that will allow the guitarist to return home for treatment every six weeks. Music fans around the world all hope for the betterment of his health.

The Lonely Island
The Wack Album
Release date: June 11
Although some may not recognize the name, if you watch Saturday Night Live, you are likely very familiar with this comedy group. Known for classics such as “Lazy Sunday” and “I’m on a Boat,” Andy Samberg and company will be releasing their third album very soon, and if their first two releases are anything to go by, the songs will be absolutely ridiculously hilarious. The band has already released a hip-hop song on YouTube, entitled “YOLO,” which explains that since you only live once, you have to take as many safety precautions as possible such as, “never go to loud clubs because it’s bad for your ears; your friends will all be sorry when you can’t hear.” Starting this week, the band will release a new video every Wednesday on its website, www.thelonelyisland.com, about the album until its release.

Hanson
Anthem
Release date: June 18
Yep… I didn’t know they still existed, either.

Sigur Rós
Kveikur
Release date: June 18
While this Icelandic ambient post-rock group certainly isn’t in the mainstream, its soothing and beautiful music has made the band a favorite of music enthusiasts. While all of the band’s previous albums have had a peaceful and relaxing sound, Kveikur, Icelandic for candle wick, will have a much darker and heavier sound than what fans are used to. While the departure is surprising to some, the band is ridiculously talented and this release is sure to impress.

MGMT
MGMT
Release date: TBA June
Psychadelic rock group MGMT earned some mixed, but mostly positive, reviews of its sophomore release, Congratulations in 2010. Many expected more pop-like hits like the band’s famous song “Kids” from the first album, but the second album was entirely frantic and psychedelic. Not much is known about the upcoming release, but the band has stated it will sound similar to Congratulations and a handful of songs have been inspired by R.E.M.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
TBA
Release date: July 23
Before Of Monsters and Men released the now famous song “Little Talks” (which is undeniably a very good song), Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros made the similarly sounding and amazing song, “Home,” back in 2009. And yes, you read that correctly: the folk/indie rock band has a release date set for its third album, but essentially nothing else has been revealed about its contents. The songs were recorded at the same time as the songs from the 2012 release, Here, but frontman Alex Ebert said the songs seemed to be forming two separate albums, so the band decided to split it up. So expect this to have a similar theme to the previous album, pretty much making the two a double album.
