Six epic movies releasing at the start of summer

With an awesome Memorial Day weekend behind us, there’s not much to look forward to around this time but hot days at the beach and cool wild nights in Ocean City! With everything in full swing, the town has once again come alive and I couldn’t be more excited!  However, I will admit that you can absolutely have too much fun in the sun, and sometimes I just want to sit and relax in some air conditioning. Being out of the sun won’t hurt either, and that’s why either of Ocean City’s two movie theaters are one of my favorite destinations of the summer! There are some truly epic movies already out or playing soon in these theaters, and I’d love to share with you my six most anticipated movies of the beginning of summer!

X-Men: Days of Future Past
Released: May 23
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen
The premise of this movie is one of the most interesting I’ve ever heard. In 2011 X-Men: First Class was released, a reboot of the franchise that supposedly ended the storyline of the first three X-Men films released in the 2000s. It came to a surprise that the next film in the series was connecting the two previously separate franchises (save from a cameo from Hugh Jackman in First Class). The original trilogy cast acts as the future selves of the First Class members, who seek their younger selves to end a losing war against the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to destroy all mutants. This movie is jam packed with star power, including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Ellen Page and Peter Dinklage.

Maleficent
Released: May 30
Genre: Fantasy/Adventure
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning
Much like the book and eventual famous musical Wicked, Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie as the villainous title character in her point of view of the classic Sleeping Beauty tale. Elle Fanning plays Princess Aurora, who was cursed as a child by Maleficent as an act of revenge to protect her land. Now older, Aurora has found herself in the middle of a magical conflict and Maleficent must take drastic measures to do what is needed to obtain peace in her land.

Edge of Tomorrow
Released: June 6
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action
Starring: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton
This movie should be on the watch list of any fan of games like Call of Duty, Halo and even classics like Goldeneye. Every gamer has experienced this: When you’re playing a really hard level, and you keep dying; but each time you progress more through the level, learning where each enemy is positioned so you can quickly take them out. Well, that’s pretty much the premise of this film, where Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, an officer with no combat skills who is deployed into battle in a losing war against an alien race. Once quickly killed in action, Major Cage finds himself revived in the beginning of the conflict. He eventually teams up with Special Forces soldier Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt) in an effort to end the seemingly impossible-to-win war.

22 Jump Street
Released: June 13
Genre: Comedy
Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube
In the sequel to one of the most surprisingly funniest movies of 2012, the most unusual police partners are now signing up for college classes in yet another undercover sting. The story is again by comedy genius Jonah Hill, so you know this flick is going to be just as hilariously rambunctious as the first. The two’s partnership and friendship will be tested in this story, as the stresses of real college life become an issue for these fake students. And by the looks of the trailers, we’ll be seeing Mr. Walters and his student dealer Eric again (albeit, in orange jumpsuits), and that scene alone makes me want to see this movie.

How to Train Your Dragon 2
Released: June 13
Genre: Fantasy/Action-Adventure/Comedy
Starring: (the voices of) Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler
Once again talking about surprisingly entertaining films, DreamWorks’ 2010 computer-animated film, How to Train Your Dragon, was a family hit that came out of nowhere. Its sequel takes place five years after the first, starring Jay Baruchel as Hiccup as a now young adult dragon rider. He and his dragon Toothless, along with the help of their friends, must battle to protect peace in their land after discovering a secret home of hundreds of wild dragons and a mysterious enemy.

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Released: June 27
Genre: Sci-Fi/Action
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci
No Shia, no Megan Fox, no problem; and I’ll take Marky Mark over both of them any day! Taking place four years after the events of the last film, an auto mechanic and his daughter discover a seemingly alien machine and spark an interplanetary conflict by researching the technology. Although this is an entirely new human cast, Transformers set to return are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet and Brains. This movie would honestly seem pretty uninteresting if it weren’t for the inclusion of what every fan has been asking for: Dinobots! Part of the Autobots, these are powerful allies who don’t transform into cars, but huge metal dinosaurs. If that last sentence doesn’t excite you, I don’t know what will.
