Here we go; middle of October and the weather is just gonna do whatever, right? So seize the days when you can get out again to hear live music outdoors. I did just that last Sunday with a Funday that started at M.R. Ducks to hear everybody’s favorite, Teenage Rust & The Fabulous Rustettes. As always, they delivered all our favorite songs that had us basking in the glow of nostalgia - remembering the past while continuing to make more wonderful memories. I’m so glad these long-time friends still love making music together and grateful to venues for hiring them. I guess we get to hear them more often now than when they played only for special events at BJ’s. But, you know I don’t think we’ll ever get over missing BJ’s, will we. So it’s really special to get to hear Billy & Maddy, Howard, Tom and Crystal & Paul still playing for us. We can hear them next for a special performance at the Globe in Berlin on Friday, October 27th. Pretty cool, huh?
Next stop was Coconuts Beach Bar & Grill to hear the Lauren Glick Band. It was their last performance of the season there and the players on this outing with Lauren were Dane Williams on guitar, Ted Galinas on bass and Mike Beavan on drums. When I arrived I saw all these people with long curly platinum blonde hair, guys and gals. It was soon apparent that it was a playful homage to Lauren in honor of her birthday. Well, Lauren had the last laugh, saying, “I just got my hair cut this morning; one step ahead of you!” Yep, her new bob is a honey blonde and she looks great, as always, no matter what color hair she’s rocking. Still, it was so cool of her daughter Maddy to coordinate the wig caper and everyone had a ball with it. Be sure to check out the pictures in Fun Fotos. It was a very special day at Coconuts.
I’ll be heading back to Coconuts this afternoon to hear the incomparable Full Circle play for us. The last time there for this band I was a bit disappointed that newest member Sean Loomis was not on stage with them but he tells me he plans to be there today. Of course, I could never really be disappointed by this group as the quality of their performances are second to none. Michelle and Kathy both have the most amazing voices and blend in harmonies so well. While Kathy plays guitar, Michelle plays harmonica and sometimes acoustic guitar. Jeff on bass and Joe Mama on drums rounds out the group; so having Sean play guitar as well is a real bonus. That means we can hear some guitar duels, right? And Sean has a wonderful voice as well. Can’t wait to hear them.
I heard Sean sing and play with his group The Dunehounds last Saturday at Harborside. These guys play such a variety of music that is so entertaining. Joining Sean on guitar is Troy Mawyer also on guitar, Kasey Briggs on bass and Adam Bilenki on drums. If that last name sounds familiar, it may be that you have heard his parents, George &Pat, play as the Bilenki Duo. I just heard them last night in Berlin in a new place called the Village Lounge, owned by their daughter Erin. Keep it in the family, right? Well, this is one talented family. Adam is one of those gifted musicians who can play drums and guitar; so he does some solo gigs, too. The vocal harmonies between Adam and Sean are so smooth and melodic. Adam takes on many of the lead vocals with the group; such as, Springteen’s “I’m On Fire” for example. Other offerings included Tom Petty’s “She Don’t Need You,” Bowie’s “Golden Years,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” and Toto’s “I Bless The Rains Down In Africa.” Then they slid towards some Blue Grass sounds and more. Such an eclectic catalog in their repertoire - most engaging. The Dunehounds will be playing Saturday for Berlin’s October Fest inside at the Globe, 4pm; and they will, no doubt, return to Harborside soon. Oh, and they’ll play for the last Friday of the season at Coconuts; that’s October 20. Don’t miss it.
I also made it out last Friday to hear the Rockoholics at Bourbon St. which is always off the hook. Then went on to Harpoon Hanna’s to hear the amazing Tranzfusion. This band has been a mainstay of excellent entertainment, dare I say it, for around 40 years. You’ll never hear a more polished group of musicians who are dedicated to playing covers of decades of hits with supreme musical integrity; meaning every song is note perfect to the original. Close your eyes and you can imagine you’re at a concert hearing the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Petty, Jethro Tull, The Cars; oh, so many more. Their catalogue of music is so vast they could play an entirely different show every night. Weather permitting, they’ll play at M.R. Ducks this Sunday at 2pm - guaranteed to be a party.
Time for me to get going and hear Full Circle. One more week for Coconuts before their closing party on October 22nd with Monkee Paw. Check the Who’s Where When for upcoming acts and hear as much as you can while you can. Have a great week, be kind to one another and always party safe.
